him about the new kind of politics, the obama of 2008 and where that had gone, and he mentioned two things that have been a real challenge, one was institutional reforms, specific references to the filibuster and, secondly, the media environment, the world in which we live where we only really listen to the people that we agree with, msnbcs or foxes of the world and there's a sense of -- >> sarah palin even said something, and she did not specifically talk about fox, is that we're preaching to the choir is what she said. >> amen. >> i think there's a growing sense that there's a need for a media -- for media outlets and opportunities that are not necessarily centrist but have different perspectives to make it easy for us to hear people who we disagree with and actually engage on the merits and not recycling old ideas. >> there's a specific problem, as well, in that we have all trained ourselves or many of us have trained ourselves to go directly past anyone's argument to their motivations and that actually is what you hear a lot on the more partisan media networks. you don't actuall

they cannot possible question him. so, they come out this morning on cbs this morning, the political director who writes about how obama needs to strangle the republicans, came on and said, this interview, you know, this was a good way after the tough hearing on benghazi, a good way, a good image for hillary clinton to end the tenure with. that is their job, to be a cleanser for her career? >> thank you, there were recommendations by dickerson he should go after the g.o.p. and pulverize, he said, and in the interview we even had cbs sunday morning with a law professor talking about throwing out the constitution, forget, it doesn't need to be used. i thought there would be a hard question when he said, well, to hillary clinton, you had a tough time on the hill, and i thought he was going after her and he asked questions but learn do how he phraseed it. >> you had a long day, also, how is your health? >> how is your health? >> that's the question we get when we want to know what is going on with benghazi? how is your health? soft because? >> the objective before we ask you anything, substantive

obama himself publicly said that the ryan proposal on medicare was serious and legitimate. the president is playing -- and not the republicans aren't. they play a lot of politics. but the president is playing politics too. when i talked to the president six months ago about medicare, he said the spending trajectory is untenable. and so he knows there needs to be a fix in this area. and what's the shame in all of this is that they can't kind of sit down and work it out, because, you know, if you were the negotiator up at camp david, you'd be able to do it. >> well, one of the problems is they're not at camp david. they are not sitting down together. but the state of the union i think should not be viewed as -- rather the inaugural address should not be viewed as a state of the union speech. this is not the place where he was laying it out. i'm told by white house officials that he put on the table for medicare is still on the table. he wants to negotiate it. and i think paul ryan will be leading the republican side on where they go on this. there are going to be serious negotiations. they

with what president obama is talking about. before we get into all the political labels and the specifics, it's clear the president plans to keep spending and borrowing and putting more debt on our children. so america has a perfect contrast between the directions that they want to go. we know -- >> but we just had an election, senator with two different directions, and america chose. that's what paul ryan said last year. the country will choose what happens in 2013. and they did. so are we past the point of two different visions in choosing? >> i don't think the country has chosen that. in fact, we see almost in the majority of states now where a conservative, bold visionary governors are implementing the ideas that work. and that's what conservatism really is. whether it's cutting taxes or freedom in the workplace or education choice, what we want to do is what we need to do for the american people is show them the successes and which ideas work. we can show where president obama's ideas go. we can look in history, at countries that failed. at europe today. we can look at his home state

that the president gave to the new republic. that's gaining national attention. in it, president obama is not happy with political opponent questioning his policies particularly when it comes to the gun control. and chris stirewalt, host of power play on foxnews.com. i want to tell the viewers we got breaking news, comments from one of the newtown families, one of the children's parents. they're very compelling and this father has a different view on gun control than president obama does. and he's the first to stand up on this issue in this way so we're going to play that momentarily, but i want to talk to you first about what's happening at the white house. the president saying i'm going directly to law enforcement and try to get their support for this. and sort of trying to go directly to the american people, which has been his approach. in the meantime though, his comments in the new republic are getting a lot of attention, chris. he was asked about how he's going to work with republicans, going forward, whether it's on gun control or immigration or what have you. and this is what he told the ne

is the growth not of the military- industrial complex but the security state and has many attributes that polite as never talked about. it is this massive system that nobody wants to reduce so continues to expand. president obama has given them more and more power. when people have challenged it, the obama administration comes in and argues that they will keep the evidence from the court so that you cannot try the case because they will just declare everything a state secret with they have done. it is the worst possible situation. when you look back at eisenhower, the description he left us with was a lot like our security state. host: a few questions from twitter -- guest: it is both of theirs. we have a wonderful system that was developed by a genius, james madison. he created a system of tripartheid branches that notably do not have enough power to govern alone. that was the key of the madisonian austin. we have one branch now this government alone. you cannot be too surprised about congress which has a terrible record on civil liberties and protecting the constitution but the last three or f

of the political hubbub about whether it would be an act of terrorism -- to me, a lot of that is white noise. there's not been an attempt to have stability in libya. the obama administration has been repeating the mistake that the bush administration made in iraq and afghanistan. they were focused on the military campaign but not focus on the nation building. we have paid a huge cost for that in iraq afghanistan. a lot of the arms in the arsenal of muammar gaddafi have been smuggled into countries like y fueled a the fi fresh insurgency. we have taken our eye off the ball in libya ever since the overthrow of gaddafi. that's the big issue from the hearings. host: our guest is max boot, senior fellow with the council on foreign relations. was a senior foreign policy adviser to the john mccain campaign in 2008. he is the author of a new book called "invisible armies." a little more about the faces of your book -- a little more about the thesis of your book. this idea of guerrilla warfare is not something new. guest: i exam the long history of insurgency and guerrilla warfare and it predates convention
